Lifeguard Headquarters 732-872-5894

Sandy Hook has a proud tradition of fine lifeguards. Sandy Hook became a state park in 1961 and the southern end of the beach was opened for public bathing. In 1974, Sandy Hook became part of Gateway National Recreation Area, a part of the National Park Service. As Fort Hancock was deactivated the bathing area at Sandy Hook has continued to grow and today stretches throughout the park. The lifeguarding staff consists of 78 lifeguards and 3 first aiders. Over 2 million visitors come to Sandy Hook annually making this one of the nation's busiest parks. The vast majority of those visitors come to enjoy the beach and ocean. It is our responsibility to protect these visitors. The seriousness with which we hold this responsibility is demonstrated by the fact that a drowning has never occurred on a guarded beach here at Sandy Hook. This is a record that we are proud of and intend to continue.
